Mahler 9 – Riccardo Chailly & Gewandhausorchester

A highlight of the Mahler cycle is the Ninth. It was the last symphony Mahler was able to complete in his lifetime and is one of the most complex compositions of his oeuvre. For Riccardo Chailly the Ninth was the key to Mahler’s symphonic universe, as he once stated in an interview: “When I decided to try to understand the world of the ten symphonies, and strangely enough, I did start very, very early with the Ninth and the Tenth, it disclosed a universe which had no barriers for me anymore.”
