After receiving the International Classical Music Award (ICMA) 2017 this January, Accentus Music’s production of Alban Berg’s opera “Wozzeck” from the Opernhaus Zürich, released on DVD and Blu-ray, wins another prestigious prize: the BBC Music Magazine Award 2017 (DVD Jury-Award). “The production was a triumph” – these are the very words of the BBC Music Magazine.
Says Christian Gerhaher, who made his debut in the title role of Alban Berg’s masterpiece in this production:
“I feel so incredibly satisfied that not only this Wozzeck-production, which was – and every director should please forgive me – the most exhilarating in my life, receives the greatest acclamation, with all of these people wonderfully collaborating with each other – the cast of singers, the director, the stage designer, the conductor, choir, orchestra and stage-workers, but especially now with this DVD-production as well. Here, I’ll dare to say that I am suddenly not disgusted by seeing my own face so harassingly near, that I am not seeing a stage filmed by a camera trying to create a new and different artistic creation, and that I am not bothered by the discrepancy of operatic work and home viewing. On the contrary, the result of visualising this extraordinary staging in that simple but nearly fully conveying way is just admirable. Again and again, It brings to life the wonderful months that we and the audience spent with Berg’s masterwork one and half years ago – I would definitely call this a defining criterion of opera DVDs. Thank you all!”
