Every year the outstanding Thomanerchor and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in St. Thomas Church. It ist one of his most famous works. For many people it is like a ritual: to hear the Christmas Oratorio and get into the mood for christmas.
In 2012 the St. Thomas Boys Choir Leipzig celebrated its 800th anniversary. An almost unbelievable period of time, if one considers that the choir outlasted all political systems, maintaining its unbroken traditions over the centuries, and was thus able to hold onto established principles such as the inclusion of the elder boys in the education of the younger ones. The Thomanerchor has admirers all around the world, and on tours in America, Japan and Australia the boys are celebrated like rock stars.
The broadcasted concert took place in December 2010.
