Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” is one of those works that span the entire world. Composed by a representative of the “old world”, created and premiered in the “new world”, it is omnipresent in the music world. And when it is performed by an orchestra with Czech roots and a Czech principal conductor, it becomes a very special event.
In April 2023, the Bamberg Symphony and Jakub Hrůša recorded this symphony using a special process, the direct-to-disc recording, in which a lacquer serves as the recording medium. The signal from three microphones was sent via an analogue mixing console directly to the cutting stylus, which carved the groove into the original at 45 revolutions per minute.
The LPs in this box set are direct copies of the originals, of which – in reference to the year of the premiere at Carnegie Hall in New York – 1893 sets were pressed in a limited and numbered edition. Since this recording comes extremely close to a real concert experience, the box set also includes an “encore” on a third LP: Dvořák’s Waltz Op. 54 No. 1, which is often played by the orchestra in conjunction with the Ninth Symphony.

Antonín Dvořáks Symphonie Nr. 9 “Aus der Neuen Welt” ist eines jener Werke, die die ganze Welt umspannen. Komponiert von einem Vertreter der “alten Welt”, in der “neuen Welt” entstanden und uraufgeführt, ist es in der Musikwelt omnipräsent. Und wenn es von einem Orchester mit tschechischen Wurzeln und tschechischem Chefdirigenten gespielt wird, dann wird es zu einem ganz besonderen Ereignis.
Im April 2023 nahmen die Bamberger Symphoniker und Jakub Hrůša diese Symphonie in einem außergewöhnlichen Verfahren auf, dem Direct-to-Disc-Recording, bei dem eine Lackfolie als Aufzeichnungsmedium dient. Das Signal von drei Mikrofonen wurde über ein analoges Mischpult direkt an den Schneidstichel gesendet, der mit 45 Umdrehungen pro Minute die Rille in das Original ritzte.
Die hier vorliegenden LPs sind direkte Kopien der Originale, von denen – in Erinnerung an das Jahr der Uraufführung in der Carnegie Hall in New York – je 1893 Exemplare als limitierte und nummerierte Edition gepresst wurden. Da diese Aufnahme einem richtigen Konzerterlebnis äußerst nahekommt, enthält das Box-Set auf einer dritten LP zudem eine “Zugabe”: Dvořáks Walzer Op. 54 Nr. 1, der vom Orchester oft in Verbindung mit der Neunten Symphonie gespielt wird.
